‘Big Game’ Trailer: Samuel L. Jackson and a Young Boy Battle Terrorists in a Movie That Really Exists

EDIT
|

The ‘Big Game’ trailer sells a concept that rides a fine line between totally preposterous and incredible. What if Air Force One was shot down and the President’s escape pod landed in the isolated woods of Finland? What is the President, now pursued by terrorists, only had one ally? What if that one ally was a pre-teen boy armed with a bow? What if the President was played by Samuel L. Jackson? Yeah, ‘Big Game’ is a real movie and we still can’t decide if it’s too ludicrous or just ludicrous enough.

Right now, we’re thinking “just ludicrous enough.” After all, director Jamari Helander is the inspired crazy person behind 2010’s fantastic ‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale,’ which follows a small community as they battle a demonic Santa Claus who is unearthed from his icy tomb on a local mountain. If Helander can make that work, then we’re pretty sure he can crack a movie that is pretty much ‘Air Force One’ meets the Amblin production of your choice.

Although this is still a modestly budgeted Finnish production starring young Onni Tommila (who was terrific in ‘Rare Exports’), the cast is backed up with a lot of actors you probably really like. Aside from Jackson, the ensemble includes Jim Broadbent, Ted Levine, Victor Garber, Felicity Huffman and Ray Stevenson. Not bad for a sophomore effort.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film, just in case you still think the whole trailer was a joke cooked up by someone over at Funny or Die or something:

Big Game tells the story of Oskari (Onni Tommila), a shy, nervous 13-year-old boy. Like his forefathers, his time has come to take a test of manhood by spending one day and one night alone in the wilderness of a vast local forest. Armed only with a bow and arrow, his task is to return with a prize to prove himself. But this is no ordinary night; Air Force One is shot down by terrorists and Oskari discovers the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson) in an escape pod. Now the fate of the most powerful man in the world lies in his hands.

With the terrorists closing in, Oskari and the President must team up to survive the most extraordinary 24 hours of their lives.

‘Big Game’ is currently set for release on March 25, 2015 in Finland. It does not have a North American release date yet, but we imagine you will get a chance to see it before 2015 is over.
