The Transformers movies are basically perfect except for one small problem: Bumblebee, the lovable Autobot hero, isn’t a Volkswagen Beetle, as he was in the original Transformers toys and cartoon series. (In the films, he’s a Chevy muscle car, the model of which varies based on whatever is Chevrolet’s hot new car of the moment.) Other than that? All five Transformers movies are basically 10/10, would own on Blu-ray.

Now Bumblebee is supposedly getting his own spinoff film (because the only other problem with Transformers are there are too many Transformers in them), supposedly set back in the 1980s, a la the old cartoon. And according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (via EW.com), Bumblebee will dress for the occasion. “You might even see a VW Bug,” di Bonaventura said. “You never know.”

Here’s how he described the plot of this spinoff:

It’s the story of a 17-, 18-year-old girl who, through a series of events, she and Bumblebee find each other, and they make each other whole ... Bumblebee’s a very loving character. He’s got a lot of heart, so of course the idyllic life of these two is interrupted by the evil Decepticons. And how are they going to be able to deal with the problem without Optimus and without everybody else?

Sounds a whole lot like the first Transformers movie, but with just Bumblebee. As a VW bug. The film, which will be directed by Kubo and the Two Strings’ Travis Knight, is supposed to open in June 2018.
