‘Doctor Who’ Star David Tennant Joins Animated ‘Chew’ Adaptation

The acclaimed Image comic series Chew is getting its own movie adaptation — well, an animated one, anyway. The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun and The Guild’s Felicia Day have already joined the voice cast for the upcoming film, which just added another familiar geek favorite: former Doctor Who star David Tennant.

THR reports that Tennant has joined the the voice cast of Chew, which is being directed by Jeff Krelitz, known for helming an episode of Torchwood: Web of Lies, as well as motion comic versions of Conan the Barbarian and Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Tennant will be voicing the part of Mason Savoy, a mentor to the main character, a “Cibopathic” who gets “psychic impressions” from the food he consumes.

Don’t expect to see this animated adaptation on the big screen, though — word is that Krelitz’s Chew will be heading straight to video (and likely VOD), forgoing a theatrical release. Here’s the official synopsis from the Chew comic, originally released in 2009:

Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He’s been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest, and most bizarre cases.

In addition to Chew, Tennant is playing Killgrave (aka the Purple Man) in Marvel’s upcoming Jessica Jones series on Netflix. He also stars on the BBC series Broadchurch, which recently concluded its second season.
