Ellen's Oscar Selfie Breaks Twitter Retweet Record in Less Than an Hour

EDIT

Billions of people watched the 2014 Oscars around the world, so it's no surprise that when host Ellen DeGeneres took a selfie with Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper and more, it was going to be popular. How popular? It broke Twitter.

The previous record for retweets was this tweet from Barack Obama back in 2012, when he was re-elected as President of the United States:

It's been 16 months and that photo has 779,000 retweets. Ellen posted this to her Twitter account and in just one hour it had over 1 million retweets:

It was so popular, Twitter had trouble staying up and Ellen's Twitter feed was momentarily down. And, this is just the beginning. As the night progresses that number will grow and could even pass 2 million by the time all is said and done.

So, get back to work Barack Obama. Maybe you and Justin Bieber can team up to reclaim your once mighty thrones. Until then, Ellen is your Twitter captain now.
