A nice Canadian boy goes down to Colombia with his brother to surf some waves, but then he meets and falls in love with the beautiful niece of a major Colombian drug lord, and decides to join the family business expecting to live happily ever after—because nothing ever goes wrong when you get into the cocaine business, right? The first trailer for ‘Escobar: Paradise Lost’ is yet another cautionary tale about the dangers of getting mixed up in the cocaine trade, but this time with Josh Hutcherson, surfing, and Benicio Del Toro portraying one of the most infamous drug lords in history.

Hutcherson plays Nick, that nice Canadian surfer dude who goes down to Colombia with his brother Dylan, played by Brady Corbet, who has been in just about every single indie film released in the last year—not that I'm complaining. Nick falls for Maria, the niece of drug lord Pablo Escobar, and decides to get involved in the family business because sure, why not, and of course this pisses Nick's brother off because he just wants to surf some righteous waves. First of all: A movie about Canadian surfers sounds intriguing and baffling enough on its own, so I'm not sure the filmmakers needed to even add in this whole Pablo Escobar thing. Second: Is Colombia a big surfing draw?

I guess we'll find out when ‘Escobar: Paradise Lost’ hits theaters on January 16, 2015.
