Though it might still be missing a release date, Ruben Fleischer's 'Gangster Squad' now has a trailer, which features Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling chasing Sean Penn's Mickey Cohen through Los Angeles. It's more than likely this will be attached to 'Dark Shadows' this weekend, but if you don't want to wait, the trailer's here.

Of late the touchstone for doing this sort of period film would be 'L.A. Confidential,' but it feels like the only recent example is Michael Mann's flawed (but interesting) 'Public Enemies.' The trailer drips retro but the soundtrack goes modern. Regardless of how retro it plays, it's got a great cast that includes Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick and Giovanni Ribisi.

Perhaps we're too far removed from film noir for this to sell it's noir-ish attributes, though the film could just as easily be a bit of a throwback to the gangster films which made Warner Brothers in the 1930's. Fleischer is definitely using some modern tricks in his action sequences (and the film was shot digitally) so it may just be its own animal. It's more than likely 'Gangster Squad' will be hitting theaters sometime this fall, and if it turns out to be near great, perhaps close to Oscar season.
