While countless people descend on Park City to watch the best and brightest of independent film, things aren’t all bad out here on the sidelines. True, the people in Utah may get to gorge themselves on brand new films, but the Sundance Film Festival also means a deluge of new reviews, interviews, release dates, and, yes, trailers for those of us who couldn’t make it. Which means you can read about the buzz for a movie like Golden Exits and find yourself with a new trailer to watch almost simultaneously.

The first teaser for Golden Exits seems to be taking the Hollywood trend of pop music in a minor key to its natural conclusion. It’s charmingly low-concept: Emily Browning, sitting on a Brooklyn stoop and quietly singing Hello’s ‘Back in a New York Groove’ to herself. No other characters are seen, no further description of the story or plot is provided, but the trailer does set the mood for director Alex Ross Perry’s fourth feature film. Perry has made a name for himself as a storyteller interested in unhappy people, and nothing in this trailer suggests that Golden Exits is going to be a huge departure from his previous work.

Fans of Perry’s work in independent cinema would do well to catch Golden Exits if they can. With Disney choosing to move forward on Perry’s screenplay for a live-action adaptation of a Winnie the Pooh movie, the writer-director may have reached a point in his career where Hollywood doors are opening for him, making his more intimate stories a thing of the past. This could be the last Sundance for Perry as a darling of independent cinema before he becomes a Hollywood mainstay.

Here is the rough synopsis of Golden Exits:

An intersectional narrative of two families in Brooklyn and the unraveling of unspoken unhappiness that occurs when a young foreign girl spending time abroad upsets the balance on both sides.

Golden Exits also stars Chloë Sevigny, Mary-Louise Parker, Jason Schwartzman, and Adam Horovitz and is currently playing at the Sundance Film Festival.
