After the Comic-Con 2012 panel for 'The Hobbit' Peter Jackson met with reporters and was asked about the rumors that they're working on some additional filming and if that might mean there could actually be three 'Hobbit' films. Here's what he had to say...

On the subject of turning 'The Hobbit: There and Back Again' into two films was "premature" according to Jackson but didn't seem entirely out of the realms of possibilities.

Says Jackson of the additional filming:

We also have the rights to use this 125 pages of additional notes where Tolkien expanded the world of 'The Hobbit'...Fran and I have been talking to the studio about other things we haven't been able to shoot and seeing if we persuade them to do a few more weeks of shooting, probably more than a few weeks actually, next year. And what form that would actually end up taking well the discussions are pretty early...

Early, yes, but it does seem like the idea of splitting the second film into two films and turning 'The Hobbit' into a new trilogy is something both he and Warner Bros. are considering. And as Jackson himself added, "There's other parts of the story that we'd like to tell that we haven't been able to tell yet."

And what better way to do that than with another movie.
