Starting today, Hulu Plus, the subscription-based service from Hulu, will be available on Apple TV, making it easier to catch up on shows you might have missed. And with Hulu now available in HD on your TV, it begs the question: do we need to pay for cable any more?

For those who already own an Apple TV, you will see the Hulu Plus link on your Apple TV home screen. All you need to do is click on it and enter your Hulu Plus username and password to watch your favorite shows.

Don't have a Hulu Plus account? This is how you sign up:

1. Go to www.huluplus.com/appletv and register online.  Launch Hulu Plus on your Apple TV, log in with your new credentials and start streaming.

2.  Create a Hulu Plus account directly through Apple TV by using your existing iTunes account and following the sign up instructions on the screen.  If you sign up for Hulu Plus through Apple TV, you will be emailed instructions on how to complete your registration so you can use Hulu Plus on all other supported devices.  After your free 1-week trial ends, your iTunes Account will be charged $7.99 per month as a recurring transaction.

Once you're set with an account, you'll be able to watch shows like 'Community,' 'New Girl,' 'Modern Family' and 'Saturday Night Live' plus entire series runs of older shows like 'The X-Files,' 'Arrested Development,' 'Lost,' 'Battlestar Galactica,' "Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and more. Plus it has the entire Criterion Collection of movies, which is amazing for movie fans.

This is a great start to unplugging from your cable or satellite subscription (and a big sign that Apple is willing to play ball with content partners other than iTunes), it's still not 100%. With Hulu Plus, iTunes and HBO GO it's a great start - but is it any cheaper? That'll be up to you and how much you watch. With the technology there, it's easier than ever to pay your own way.
