The first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's highly anticipated 'Inherent Vice' has finally arrived online, and this is definitely not your average detective story. Based on Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel of the same name, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the unorthodox detective Doc Sportello (yes, really), who gets mixed up in a convoluted and totally out-there crime tale.

Phoenix and Anderson previously teamed together on 2012's 'The Master,' picking up three Oscar nominations, and from the looks of this trailer and the Christmastime release date, they might just be picking up a few more.

'Inherent Vice' has been described as a stoner/psychedelic detective story, and we most certainly get that vibe here, along with something a bit Coen-esque -- a far cry from the more serious and grim stuff of Anderson's 'There Will Be Blood' and 'The Master.' It's been a while since we've seen a lighter side to Anderson's work.

The film also stars Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jena Malone, Katherine Waterston, Owen Wilson, Eric Roberts, Michael K. Williams, Jillian Bell, Anders Holm, and Maya Rudolph (who also happens to be Anderson's wife).

'Inherent Vice' hits theaters in December, or, as Witherspoon's voiceover sweetly promises, just in time for Christmas.
