Paramount has released the first 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' trailer, a prequel to the established Jack Ryan stories that previously featured the likes of Alec BaldwinHarrison Ford and Ben Affleck in the title role. But now Chris Pine is up at the plate.

The late Tom Clancy, who passed away on Tuesday night, created the Jack Ryan character, having written various stories, four of which have been adapted into films. In 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,' Chris Pine portrays a younger version of this pre-CIA intelligence officer who's working as a stock broker for a billionaire in Moscow. Unfortunately, said billionaire frames him for a terrorist plot and kidnaps his wife, forcing Jack to race against the clock to clear his name.

According to director Kenneth Branagh, "We take the fundamentals of the myth of Jack Ryan and do an original film that was never a book. We’re making our own story in a modern-day 2013." But don't worry. "Mr. Clancy is very aware of and very behind the concept."

'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' is slated for release on December 25, 2013 (though that could change), and is directed by Branagh (who's also starring as the villain) and features  Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, and David Paymer.
