Can you really say you disliked a movie if you turned it off after only watching the first three minutes? According to Jennifer Lawrence — and my mom — you can. During a recent appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, Lawrence revealed her failed attempt to watch Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film about an older narcissistic artist who’s made a habit of dating his young female muses and carelessly tossing them aside when they eventually show themselves to be thinking, feeling individuals instead of attractive furniture. You know, sort of like mother!

And like the Darren Aronofsky film starring Jennifer Lawrence, Phantom Thread also explores the darkly humorous relationship between a zealous artist and the woman who suffers his creative bulls—. I mean, did Jennifer Lawrence actually even watch mother!?

Based on her recent discussion with Maron, I’m starting to think not. Lawrence says that she valiantly “put in a solid good three” minutes toward watching Phantom Thread before she turned it off. “I’m sorry to anybody who loved that movie,” she said. “I couldn’t give that kind of time. It was three minutes and I was just [oof].” Listen, the cool thing about opinions is that they’re entirely subjective; some people will not like the things you like, and vice versa. So it’s totally okay that the internet’s imaginary BFF didn’t enjoy Paul Thomas Anderson’s most recent masterpiece.

But her reasoning for disliking the movie, in which Daniel Day-Lewis plays an obsessive fashion designer who falls in love with his latest muse (Vicky Krieps), is kind of hilarious:

Is it just about clothes? Is [Lewis’s character] kind of like a narcissistic sociopath and he’s an artist so every girl falls in love with him because he makes her feel bad about herself and that’s the love story? I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know. I’ve been down that road, I know what what’s like, I don’t need to watch that movie.

Before you get too excited, Lawrence clarified that she wasn’t talking about recent ex and mother! director Darren Aronofsky (sure, Jen). HOWEVER, her reasons for turning Phantom Thread off after just three minutes could just as easily be used by someone else to justify their dislike of mother!.

And it’s really a shame she stopped watching Phantom Thread that quickly because minutes three through five are total bangers.
