If you did not know that Sony Pictures is working towards the production of a brand new He-Man movie, then you obviously are not one of the 462 supporters of the Change.org petition to have a new Masters of the Universe movie be put into production. The petition also (very helpfully) provides a suggested release date of 2017 or 2018, though I’m sure that the audience would gladly push that back for the right story.

Yesterday, their anticipation took a big step forward when actor Kellan Lutz shared on Twitter that he had met with director McG, ostensibly to discuss taking on the title role.

Lutz is best known for his role as Emmet Cullen in the Twilight franchise; he also played the title role in the 2014 film The Legend of Hercules. While I may not be qualified to evaluate his potential as He-Man, a mock-up of Lutz in the role by one of his Twitter followers does suggest he bears a pretty striking resemblance to the cartoon warrior.

Will we see a He-Man movie by the 2017 or 2018 deadline? Does the world even need another He-Man movie? When I was your age, the only He-Man movie we had was Masters of the Universe and we considered ourselves lucky to have it! Regardless, with McG set to direct, we should be primed for plenty of hyper-masculine swordplay at some point in the next few years. For the sake of fans everywhere, here’s hoping that Kellan Lutz is the one that gets to shout, “I have the power!”
