Did you know that Labyrinth wasn’t originally conceived as a musical? Jim Henson only added songs to his fantasy film after he cast rock star David Bowie as Jareth. If you’re gonna have David Bowie playing the part, you might as well get the full Bowie. That’s just one of an entire maze of facts featured in the last episode of You Think You Know Movies!

The role of Sarah was highly coveted around Hollywood, and the list of young actresses who auditioned for the role included Helena Bonham Carter, Marisa Tomei, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mia Sara, Laura Dern, and Jane Krakowski. The role eventually went to Jennifer Connelly, who was given the part just one week after her audition for Jim Henson, who felt she best captured the experience of being a girl caught between childhood and adulthood. Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak was miffed by the perceived similarities between Labyrinth and his work; the end credits of the finished movie eventually added a tag that read “Jim Henson acknowledges his debt to the works of Maurice Sendak.”
