‘Madame Bovary’ played a few festivals last year, but we haven’t heard much about Sophie Barthes’ adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel. The film centers on Madame Emma Bovary, who marries a well-meaning doctor who turns out to be the human equivalent of Ambien. Emma, who yearns for the romance and finer things in life which she’s often read about in books, begins a series of affairs with more alluring suitors, and spends money beyond her means in order to distract herself from the dullness of her marriage. But that’s when she starts getting into some trouble, of course, as her affairs prove tumultuous and she begins accruing a large debt.

The film co-stars Ezra Miller, Rhys Ifans, Logan Marshall-Green, Paul Giamatti, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes, and judging by the first trailer, it definitely has some beautiful cinematic potential. We’ll see how it holds up to its contemplative and provocative source material. There’s currently no release date set for ‘Madame Bovary,’ but with the arrival of the first trailer, we should hear something pretty soon.
