Mariah Carey Will Voice Commissioner Gordon in ‘LEGO Batman’
“I’ll take ‘Roles That Both Gary Oldman and Mariah Carey Have Played’ for $200, Alex.”
In surprising and fascinating news, via Deadline, Warner Bros. has apparently found their Commissioner Gordon for the upcoming LEGO Batman spinoff, and it is Mariah Carey. Yep, that Mariah Carey. Finally, Gotham City will have a police commissioner who’s both tough on crime and a dreamlover.
Deadline’s Mike Fleming says he’s “not sure if Commissioner Gordon will sing, but it’s nice to know the character can, if called on.” Personally, I’m hoping for a post-credits performance of “Hero,” as that would be the most tonally appropriate to the movie, although I would also accept a rendition of “One Sweet Day” after all the villains of Gotham have been sent back to Arkham Asylum.
UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter claims that Deadline has their facts wrong and that Carey won’t be voicing Commissioner Gordon, but instead a new character, the mayor of Gotham.
The LEGO Batman Movie is shaping up to be the craziest big-screen version of the Dark Knight since the 1960s film spun off from the Adam West TV show. Carey joins a cast that already includes Will Arnett as Batman, plus Ralph Fiennes (Alfred), Michael Cera (Robin), Rosario Dawson (Batgirl), and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker. I’m also crossing my fingers for Ace the Bat-Hound to make at least a cameo appearance.
Carey would certainly be a different Gordon than previous onscreen interpretations (which include Neil Hamilton from the ’60s Batman, Pat Hingle from the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher films, and Gary Oldman in the three Christopher Nolan epics). But so what? LEGO Batman is all about having fun with the Caped Crusader’s overly serious mythos. And I’ve said many times that Commissioner Gordon will always be my baby.
