Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' looks like the fevered dreams of a kid who stayed up too late watching Japanese movies and cartoons, and we mean that as a compliment. The film is set to open in a little over two weeks, and now there's a new trailer that plays up the stakes.

Here we see Idris Elba lead the footage as his Stacker Pentecost (yes, that's his character's name) gives a speech to get the troops ready to go into battle with their giant robots (named Jaegers). Where the film's other trailers have been about set up and the spectacle, this sets a tone that the movie is going to play it mostly straight.

Though the film has screened for some critics (and early word is positive), it's hard to say if this is going to be more of a cult favorite or one of the summer's biggest blockbusters. Most of the biggest summer movies these days are sequels or are based on preexisting material (like comic books), while 'Pacific Rim' comes straight from the mind of del Toro. For that it's admirable -- and one of the riskier big films of the summer.

Here's the film's synopsis. 'Pacific Rim' opens July 12.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
