We have our 'Wreck-It Ralph,' various video game-adapted movies, and even a feature-length 'Angry Birds' film on the way, but now Hollywood continues the rich tradition of creating worlds around our favorite nostalgic items with the announcement of a 'Space Invaders' movie.

Apparently, arcade-game movies are the new black.

The Wrap reports that Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell have come together to producer 'Space Invaders,' based on the classic '80s arcade game, for Warner Bros. That's right, a film with its own set of characters and heart-pounding plot will be created out of the game that sees several rows of alien spacecrafts slowing descending upon the player, who fires back and then takes cover behind those easily destroyed blocks.

We don't really have a clue as to what this movie might look like, but assume it'll have something to do with aliens invading Earth. Luckily, 'Futurama' fans will remember that the show already gave us an idea of what it might look like if Space Invaders came to life and started causing destruction on the planet. Check it out in the segment from the season 4 episode below (at the 2:50 mark).

No director or casting have been announced for the 'Space Invaders' movie, but Goldsman is the Oscar-winning writer behind Ron Howard's 'A Beautiful Mind,' and he produced and directed the Colin Farrell-led 'Winter's Tale.' It certainly seems like they're grasping at straws with this latest movie attempt, but at the very least, it'll be a good excuse for new versions of the game to be made. Expect one for mobile devices.
