Although SPECTRE were the bad guys behind all of James Bond’s most famous adventures, including Dr. No and From Russia With Love, the criminal organization hasn’t been seen onscreen for almost 45 years, since 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever. That’s just one of the many facts packed into the latest episode of You Think You Know Movies, which explores James Bond’s old haunts for a look at Spectre.

The cause for SPECTRE’s early retirement was a lawsuit between Bond creator Ian Fleming and Thunderball producer Kevin McClory, who sued his former collaborator for turning an unproduced screenplay they’d developed together into the original Thunderball novel. The case stretched on for decades, with Fleming ultimately given the literary rights to SPECTRE and McClory retaining the film rights. Hence, SPECTRE vanished from movie screens like a ghost, although they did return for the unofficial Bond film Never Say Never Again (which was produced by McClory). In 2013, the rights to SPECTRE and its affiliated characters were purchased by the official Bond film franchise, clearing the way for the brand new movie starring Daniel Craig and Christoph Waltz.
