Though J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek was the 11th film in the franchise, it was actually the first ever Star Trek movie to win an Oscar. At the 2010 Oscars, the film took home the trophy for Best Makeup, beating Il Divo and The Young Victoria. That’s just one of the facts packed into the latest episode of You Think You Know Movies, which focuses on the 2009 Star Trek movie!

The Star Trek movies have their share of futuristic technology from phasers to communicators and more. With that technology comes a lot of designs and sounds that haven’t been invented yet. The production collaborated with Nokia on a design for the new communicators and Abrams invited sound designer Ben Burtt (Star Wars) to help create sounds for some of these devices. To create the sound of a photon torpedo, he stretched out a Slinky and tapped the sides with a drumstick.
