One of the biggest concerns about 'Star Trek Into Darkness' was that the film was going to be a remake of 'Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan,' which made no sense to those who know the series because the character wouldn't have interacted with the crew in the new timeline of these movies. Now there's a synopsis for 'Into Darkness,' and it suggests that J.J. Abrams and company may be plundering another familiar character, but not Khan Noonien Singh.

Paramount released this synopsis today:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Okay a little boilerplate, but it does suggest that they may be taking from the Original Series episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" which had Kirk and company going up against Gary Mitchell, who was an old classmate who received God-like powers. With the film offering a nine-minute preview in front of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' screenings, and a trailer due by December 14, we should know a lot more about the film shortly. 'Star Trek Into Darkness' is set for release on May 17, 2013.
