Looking over Will Ferrell’s filmography, it’s almost shocking that among his many original characters, so few of them are reprised in sequels. Anchorman 2 is Ferrell’s only sequel to date – yes, his Mugatu appeared in Zoolander 2, and he stars in Daddy’s Home 2, but he didn’t write those. That’s super rare in our current entertainment culture of turn-everything-good-into-a-sequel-or-reboot. Ferrell’s best films, from Elf to Talladega Nights to Step Brothers, remain untainted by the Hollywood sequel machine. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t curious about, and even asking for sequels. And Ferrell has an awesome idea for one.

Ferrell and Adam McKay have talked about the possibility of a sequel to 2008’s Step Brothers for years now, and there was even a rumor back in 2016 about it. But in a new interview with the New York Daily NewsFerrell reveals what Step Brothers 2 would’ve been (maybe still could be?) about:

We talked about Step Brothers, and then Adam and I got sidetracked with other things. We had a whole story where John and I follow our parents to live in a retirement community and try to convince them that we earned the right to retire as well.

Um, that sounds amazing. Honestly, Ferrell and John C. Reilly could just spend an entire movie running through a Toys R Us and I’d be on board, but two nitwit man children trying to live in a retirement home? Yes please! Why isn’t this in development yet?

As promising as a Step Brother 2 sounds, there’s a couple factors holding Ferrell back. One, which he’s spoken about a few times, is the same concern we all have – that fans push for sequels, but are often ultimately disappointed. And then a bad sequel can dampen the memory of a great original. He told the Daily News:

The sequel thing is so funny because, we decided obviously to go down the road with Anchorman, and we made what I thought was a really great sequel, really funny. The entertainment media and fans beg you, and beg you, and beg you for sequels, and then you make it and you definitely have a fraction that’s like, ‘Well, not as good as the first one.’ So I guess it’s a catch-22. It’s a nice catch-22, because people love the movies in the first place.

The other issue is McKay, who’s since transitioned into some more serious material since his comedy films. The director is currently working on the Christian Bale-led Dick Cheney biopic and Bad Blood, the Jennifer Lawrence vehicle about a controversial blood testing bio-tech company. What’s a Ferrell comedy without McKay behind the camera? Not as promising. But that doesn’t entirely rule out a Step Brothers 2 down the line. Luckily we’ve at least got Ferrell and Reilly’s Holmes and Watson comedy on the way.
