With 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' now in theaters, marking a high point for this art form, we take a look back at some of the most incredible instances of motion-capture performances, and see how this art form has evolved.
With so much attention focused on 2015, and the explosion of tentpole releases that are coming, it's worth noting that the biggest sequel of them all isn't due until the year after. James Cameron is gearing up to make some of the biggest films of all time as he's working on three sequels to 'Avatar,' with the first due in 2016, and today some expected casting for the series has been confirmed: Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will return to Pandora.
James Cameron made movie history when 'Avatar' became the No. 1 box office movie of all time, and if that doesn't warrant a sequel (or, rather, a bunch of sequels), what does? Cameron has already begun work on three more 'Avatar' films -- the first of which to be released in December 2016 -- and, of course, there's been some misleading gossip as to where he'll take us next. To set the record straight a bit, the director let loose a few tantalizing tidbits to whet the palette.
Despite being the highest grossing film of all time, public opinion on James Cameron's 'Avatar' seems to be all over the place. However, there's one thing that everyone can agree on -- Stephen Lang made one helluva villain. His evil Colonel Miles Quaritch may have been one moustache shy of tying women to railroad tracks, but it was a fun, broad performance that made his complete and utter defeat feel like a real triumph.
And he'll be back for the sequels ... somehow.
Yesterday, it was announced that our future stay in Pandora will be longer than expected. Three sequels to the James Cameron blockbuster 'Avatar' are currently being prepared, with the first expected to drop in 2016. But this begs the question: are you still even excited about returning to that world?
Yesterday, we reported the news that James Cameron and 20th Century Fox hired 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' writer Josh Friedman to work on the script for 'Avatar 2,' though the studio had no comment. Today, they've not only confirmed Friedman's involvement, they've announced that writers Shane Salerno ('Savages') and the team of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver ('Rise of the Planet of the Apes') will also be joining the 'Avatar' sequel team. Why so many writers? Because 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3' and 'Avatar 4' will all be filmed simultaneously and that all four writers will assist Cameron in hashing out the three screenplays.
James Cameron's 'Avatar' shattered box-office records during its time in theaters and currently sits at the $2.7 billion mark in total worldwide grosses. It's only natural with a film of this magnitude to wonder how the whole idea came about, and now we have an in-depth account of how the man of 'Titanic,' 'Aliens' and 'The Terminator' fame created this modern flick. Too bad he was kind of forced to do it!
