Guardians of the Galaxy

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Almost Killed Off Stan Lee
Aside from the larger connections in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s one thing that ties every one of their superhero films together, regardless of which studio is behind it: a cameo from comic book creator Stan Lee. Even ‘Big Hero 6’ gave Lee his own cameo in animated form. But James Gunn apparently almost disrupted this long-standing Marvel movie tradition, as the director revealed that he originally planned to kill off Stan Lee for his cameo in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’

Things have been pretty intense over the last few weeks, as hackers attacked Sony and threatened terrorist action if the studio released ‘The Interview.’ You may not get to see ‘The Interview’ anytime soon, but we still have plenty of movies to look forward to, like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2.’ As director James Gunn reveals, Sony isn’t the only studio impacted by all of this hacking business.

The 147 Best (And Worst) Movies Of 2014
I enjoy reading top ten lists, but I don’t particularly like making a top ten list—which does nothing as far as an explanation as to why I decided to do a Top 147 list (or Bottom 147 list, if that’s more your thing). I covered four film festivals in 2014, so I saw more than 147 movies, but these are the 147 movies I saw that came out in a theater this year. (I realize ‘The Interview’ is now not coming out, but, whatever, it’s on here too.) I am only one human being, so I didn’t see every movie that came out this year—Where’s ‘Noah’? I never saw ‘Noah’—but I think I saw quite a few! Anyway, here they all are. (I only wrote about a few of them because I am not a crazy person.)

Original Awesome Mix Vol. 1 From 'Guardians of the Galaxy'
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was such a fun and original film with director James Gunn’s fingerprints all over it, and one of the best, most exciting films of the year. That’s due in part to the wise music choices featured on the soundtrack and Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s mixtape. Gunn previously released “Awesome Mix Vol. 0,” which featured the music he played for the cast on set, and now the director is back with another mixtape: the original version of “Awesome Mix Vol. 1.”

Don't Expect a Guardians of the Galaxy / Avengers Crossover
Everyone has assumed that, at some point towards the end of this current Marvel Cinematic Universe, the paths of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers would cross. Yes, one superhero team is busy protecting Earth, and the other occupied in outer space, it makes too much sense to not have them meet up in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ right? Never mind the “it makes sense” part, we just really want this to happen. Well, we might never happen according to ‘Guardians’ director James Gunn who warns fans about making such assumptions.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Blooper Reel: Watch Star-Lord, Rocket, and the Rest Goof Off
A lot of Blu-rays and DVDs put blooper reels on their DVD and Blu-ray releases, but Marvel Studios’ tend to be the best. When you get a bunch of really charismatic actors in crazy costumes and give them very silly dialogue, their inevitable mistakes are just so much funnier. Watching an actor mess around on set is funny, but watching an actor dressed like your favorite superhero goof around on set is hilarious. So, it should go without saying that the blooper reel for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is a real winner.

It’s that time of the year, when pop culture websites and critics publish their annual Best Of lists and we heap praise on the best and most beloved movies and TV shows of the year. But what about the average moviegoer and TV-viewer? That’s where Facebook comes in. The social media site has released their top 10 movies and top 10 TV shows of the year, based on the most discussed titled of 2014. While some are fairly obvious, the lists might surprise you and inspire you to contemplate the overlap between what’s popular and what’s actually good.

No Matter What You May Think, Lee Pace Promises That He’s Not British
Before interviewing Lee Pace—who returns to Middle-earth as the Elvenking, Thranduil, in the upcoming ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’—I conducted a completely scientific poll (it was not scientific at all, I randomly asked my friends), asking “Where do you think Lee Pace is from?” Of the seven people I asked, only one knew that Pace was born in the United States. (This particular person guessed Nebraska, the correct answer is Oklahoma and/or Texas.) What’s most remarkable about this is just how shocked people look when they find out that Pace went to high school in Houston. (Honestly, this all seems like a compliment. An “actor from England” seems to have more prestige than “an actor from Houston.”)

Back in September, Al Pacino was gushing over ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and how he had surprisingly loved it, which of course led the veteran actor to pondering the possibilities of starring in a Marvel superhero movie. And now Pacino seems to be closer to achieving his dreams, as he’s reportedly met with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to discuss the possibility of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
