In the Beginning, There Was ‘X-Men’: Revisiting the Superhero Movie That Started It All

20th Century Fox
20th Century Fox

For better or worse, the current status of the superhero movie can be tracked back to one film. One modestly budgeted production designed the template and set the tone for a film movement that still hasn't peaked. Some remember it fondly. Some think it got more wrong than it did right. But there's no denying it: Bryan Singer's 'X-Men' is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential films of the past two decades.

‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Review: A Time Travel Movie That Somehow Makes Sense

X Men Days of Future Past review
20th Century Fox

Even though the story behind ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ has been around for 33 years now, the idea of a superhero movie meshed with a movie about time travel seems, let’s say … daunting. Especially for a superhero franchise like X-Men, which is known for having a lot of superheroes.

It’s just that it’s hard enough to make a big-budget superhero movie make sense (as the so very recent ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ taught us) -- and adding the cinematic equivalent of pai gow (at least, nothing confuses me more than pai gow) to this whole equation seemed like kind of a bad idea. I mean, how many time travel movies make sense in the first place, beyond the ‘Back to the Futures’ and the ‘Loopers’ and the ‘Primers’ of the word? And none of those movies have dozens and dozens of mutants to keep track of their whereabouts.

Writer-Producer Simon Kinberg on ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ and Tearing Down ‘The Last Stand’

DOFP

It's surprising to listen to a writer almost gleefully explain how he negated his past work, and such is the case with Simon Kinberg, who wrote and produced the time travel storyline of 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' In 'Days of Future Past,' Wolverine's (Hugh Jackman) consciousness is sent back to his younger, 1973 self, in an effort to prevent the mutant-killing Sentinels from ever being created. And, as time travel movies are wont to do, they can change what has come before. And one of those movies that came before, 'X-Men': The Last Stand,' was co-written by Kinberg.

There are some minor, non-specific spoilers in the below exchange with Kinberg (some much more specific ones will publish after the film's release), but he does dive into the psyche of a screenwriter who just may be undoing some of his own work.

Mel Gibson as Wolverine? ‘X-Men’ Concept Art Reveals the Casting That Almost Was

Mel Gibson Wolverine Concept Art

Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine in the 'X-Men' movies for so long that it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role at this point. Heck, it's hard to believe that he wasn't even the first choice for the role and only nabbed it after Dougray Scott had to pull out at the last second. But before they ultimately cast a (at the time) relatively unknown Australian actor, the first 'X-Men' movie pursued one of the most famous Australian-born actors in Hollywood for the role.

Yep, Mel Gibson could have played Wolverine and concept art exists to prove it.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Clip: Mystique Still Has All the Right Moves

x-men clip

Most of of the 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' clips and trailers have so far focused on the film's large ensemble of new and returning mutant superheroes, while the main villain, Peter Dinklage's Bolivar Trask, remains out of the spotlight. Though our latest look doesn't exactly give us a clear indication of what kind of character he is, it does give us a chance to see him come fact to face with Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique in a pretty cool action scene.
