The Light Between Oceans definitely looks like a Derek Cianfrance film: beautiful actors experiencing not-so-beautiful things in an emotionally devastating, intimate drama. The first trailer for the director’s follow-up to the divisive Place Beyond the Pines is here, featuring current Oscar hopefuls Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender in what could be an early contender for next year’s awards. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts polished their monocles, twiddled the ends of their impeccably-groomed mustaches, cleared the straggling bits of crumpet from their throats, and announced the nominees for the BAFTA Film Awards late last night. Many of the films that have emerged as this season’s usual suspects made their expected appearances — why hello, ‘Carol’ and ‘The Big Short’ and ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Spotlight’ and ‘Bridge of Spies’ — but the unveiling of the BAFTA hopefuls was not without its surprises, both pleasant and un-pleasant.

And when it comes to the studios’ opinion, the actor with the bigger name tends to get campaigned as lead despite a co-star’s equal-if-not-greater-than prominence in the film. But the lack of strict guidelines in Oscar categories and the unusual number of performances that challenge typical categorization this year have led to a lot of talk about category fraud, two words you’ve probably heard a lot this year.

It took 15 years to bring The Danish Girl to the bring screen, Tom Hooper’s latest film about the first woman to undergo gender-reassignment surgery in 1930s Berlin. Starring Eddie Redmayne as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe, and Alicia Vikander as her painter wife Gerda Wegener, the film charts their love story and journey. Over an intimate luncheon and interview, Hooper shared stories of his work on the film, the real trans women consulted with and what the screenplay taught him about love and expectations.

We recently learned that Sony is planning a semi-reboot of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, skipping the second and third books in author Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series and moving right ahead to the fourth novel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web. But the studio is reportedly planning on making the film without director David Fincher and stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. There’s just one little issue, though: Mara says as far as she knows, she’s still supposed to star in it.
