September may traditionally be a wasteland of half-baked films unfit to open in a proper month, but the lack of competition can actually be a good thing. Could 'Prisoners,' a film made specifically for an adult audience, have opened as well as it did if it was released in a busier month? Probably not.
Battle of the Year
Apologies to those of you who like to plan your movie nights over a year in advance: a handful of changes were made to the release calendar, including at least two major delays and a Christmas present for musical lovers.
Teen dance movies had their time in the sun, and though the 'Step Up' franchise continues, the genre seemed to peak about a decade ago. While movies about inspirational coaches are evergreen, and show up every couple of years. Someone had the brilliant idea to combine the two genres, and that's why we're getting Josh Holloway coaching dancers in 'Battle of the Year.'
