Early in the game, candidates for 2014 Oscar nominations are written down in pencil. A lot can happen between now and the morning Oscar’s nominations are revealed, and the game changes often.
Let's not beat around the bush: 'The Monuments Men' looks terrific and we'll be completely and totally shocked if it's not one of the year's most talked-about films come Oscar time. Then again, we'd expect nothing less than a historical dramatic comedy directed by George Clooney starring the likes of Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Jean Dujardin and Cate Blanchett. The first official poster has arrived, making it pretty clear that this insanely good cast will be the major selling point going forward.
It should be no surprise that Woody Allen, survivor of a protracted tabloid scandal, should make 'Blue Jasmine.' It's a story of what happens after the headlines, about the emotional aftershocks of big, juicy news and how they affect unexpected people in unexpected ways. This isn't a very funny movie, but its observational instincts are so bright that the scenes evoke laughter, even when the story is actually rather sad. It's one of Allen's best films in years and a silver-plated gift to Cate Blanchett who takes the character and runs with it.
We've already seen a teaser trailer for 'How to Train Your Dragon 2,' but we've known little about the voice cast this time around. During DreamWorks Animation's panel at Comic-Con this afternoon, the studio made a big casting announcement for the sequel, with actors Cate Blanchett, Kit Harington, and Djimon Hounson joining the line-up.
Okay, so we've had Snow White twice ('Mirror Mirror' and 'Snow White and the Huntsman'), and we're going to get 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' and the new take on 'Sleeping Beauty' with 'Maleficent,' so what fairy tales are left to redo as a live action re-imagings? It turns out the next one will likely be 'Cinderella' and it could be pretty great as it's got Mark Romanek attached to direct and is looking to land Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother.
George Clooney has never had any trouble assembling an all-star cast for his productions. Indeed, why would he? But his latest is looking like it boasts the most impressive line-up to date. Don't believe it? How does a movie featuring Clooney, Daniel Craig, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman and recent Best Actor Oscar winner Jean Dujardin sound?
When you're as successful and famous as Barbra Streisand it seems you can call your shots, because her next film has a powerhouse of a cast. Oscar winners Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett are set to lead Streisand's fourth picture 'Skinny and Cat.' We guess if you're Streisand you can also have a terrible title if you want as well.
