At just below $1 billion, ‘Despicable Me 2’ is one of the biggest movies of all-time. It’s the fourth biggest animated film of all-time behind ‘Frozen’, ‘Toy Story 3’ and ‘The Lion King’. Not bad for a supervillain and his little yellow friends! But, if you think you know everything about the fluffy franchise, test your knowledge with the latest installment of You Think You Know Movies! That’s what I am talk-eeng a-bout!

Is the Era of the Blockbuster Coming to an End?

Sony/Sony/Warner Bros.
There was definitely something apocalyptic about the 2013 summer movie season, and we’re not just talking about the movies themselves.
While major releases, like ‘This Is the End,’ ‘Oblivion,’ ‘Pacific Rim‘ and ‘Elysium,’ dealt with the end of the world, Hollywood appeared to be on the verge of collapse out in the real world. Films that looked like surefire hits flopped; surefire disasters proved to be more disastrous than everyone predicted; the handful of films without numbers in their titles stumbled; and, from the sidelines, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas smirked, shrugged and predicted the end of the moviegoing experience as we know it.
So, what exactly happened here? More importantly, what does this mean for the future of studio filmmaking? It’s easy to imagine Hollywood looking at what happened this summer and learning plenty of lessons; but, maybe, not always the right ones.

The Minions made millions … and they are looking for more.
Despicable Me 2’ demolished the competition over the July 4 weekend, building off the success of the first film and banking an estimated $142.1 million to win the holiday frame. Universal obviously has a monster franchise on its hands (the original ‘Despicable’ earned $543 million worldwide back in 2010), and it intends on keeping the party going – but this ‘Despicable Me 3' might not be what you thought it was going to be.

Which would you expect to win the Fourth of July weekend: the Disney-produced, Johnny Depp-starring revival of an iconic American hero or the sequel to a French-made, Steve Carell-starring animated movie about a lovable supervillain? Well, it looks like American audiences simply aren't interested in westerns, even the uber-expensive ones starring Captain Jack Sparrow with a bird on his head. 'Despicable Me 2' destroyed 'The Lone Ranger' over the holiday weekend. Like, totally wrecked it. Mercilessly.

What separates a villain from a supervillain? It's simple: the scope, ambition and sheer, unbridled lunacy of their evil plans. A villain is practical and smart, and thinks ahead. A supervillain is dramatic and insane, and wants everyone in the world to acknowledge his or her demented genius.
With 'Despicable Me 2' already in theaters, it's time to pay a visit to a medium that has played host to countless supervillains and countless more ludicrous supervillain schemes. There are no limits in the world of animation, so there are no limits to the machinations of an animated supervillain. Here are 10 ridiculous plans made by cartoon villains.

'Despicable Me 2' Review

I am not a monster. I want to be very clear and upfront about this. Yes, those little squibbling yellow marshmallows called “minions” in 'Despicable Me' and 'Despicable Me 2' are adorable. I don't care how much of a tough guy you think you are, when these little buggers are vrooming about the screen and warbling and wobbling and making exaggerated facial expressions; it is biologically impossible for a human being not to smile. They're wonderful and the design team that creates them (and the scientists who code the array of imaging rendering computers) should all continue to take a bow. With this qualifier out of the way, allow me to warn anyone over the age of 10 or 11 that 'Despicable Me 2' stinks.
