Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

While fans of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series may always secretly resent the Olympic Games for not recognizing Quidditch as an official sport, that doesn’t mean the Olympics have nothing to offer them. This past week, the newest trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them premiered during the international events, offering us perhaps our best look yet at the upcoming expansion of the Harry Potter universe.

It’s a big day in the wizarding world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which has revealed our first official look (first look ever, actually) at Ezra Miller’s mysterious character from the upcoming Harry Potter spinoff. But that’s not the only news, as the film has made a last-minute addition to the cast, with Mad Max: Fury Road star Zoe Kravitz joining the lineup in a small, but reportedly crucial role.

This year we got a new ‘Harry Potter’ book and play, a new ‘Harry Potter’ spinoff, and now we’re getting a spinoff sequel. It’s a very good time to be a ‘Harry Potter’ fan.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters in November, returning Harry Potter fans to J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world — or a different corner of it, anyway. Warner Bros. brought the first film in their magical spinoff trilogy to Comic-Con 2016, where they debuted a rather, uh, fantastic new trailer featuring plenty of beasts, indeed.

Not to be outdone by Wonder Woman and The LEGO Batman Movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has also gotten its own special poster for Comic-Con 2016 — what, you didn’t really think the first film in a new Harry Potter spinoff trilogy would appear in Hall H without debuting a new poster, did you? In any case, the new poster is definitely in the spirit of Comic-Con, and it looks like something you might actually want to display on your wall.

One of the major truths of the entertainment industry is that there will never be a more interesting movie than the one you haven’t yet made. This weekend, while The Legend of Tarzan director David Yates was gently trying to nudge conversations towards his film currently in theaters, people were understandably curious about his upcoming return to Hogwarts, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And Yates let a particularly interesting piece of information drop.

When J.K. Rowling first revealed there was an American version of Howgarts, Harry Potter fans west of the Atlantic Ocean collectively freaked out. We too get our own school of witchcraft and wizardry?! Yep, and now we know a ton of new details about the school’s history, houses, and founder.

There was one thing in the most recent trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them that stood out among the rest — the mention of a certain headmaster at Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, maybe you’ve heard of him? As the new spinoff takes place several decades before the events of the Harry Potter series, Dumbledore isn’t headmaster just yet, but he does get a healthy name-drop in the trailer. And that has us wondering if we’ll see (or hear of) any other familiar characters in the upcoming film.
