As the ’90s increasingly stop being yesterday and start transforming into “back in the day,” nostalgia for the decade continues to grow. Thankfully, Jon M. Chu is here to remind you that yes, the time of your youth was definitely the best time of them all. His latest film sounds built from the ground up to send you into fitful-but-pleasurable flashbacks. It’s a high-school dance movie titled ‘Can’t Touch This.’

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' was rumored to have a troubled post-production, which made director Jon M. Chu (who at that point was best known for directing 'Step Up' sequels and a Justin Bieber documentary) look out of his depth. The film turned out to be a huge success, so it's not surprising to hear Chu's the current frontrunner for directing duties on 'G.I. Joe 3.'

Here's a sentence we never thought we'd type: 'G.I. Joe 3' is moving forward at Paramount and Hasbro. It's not that we didn't want a 'G.I. Joe 3' but after 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' was pushed back over nine months amid rumors of a major bomb, we were just beginning to think we were the only ones who wanted a 'G.I. Joe 3.' But 'Retaliation' made a surprising $41 million at the box office and now the 'G.I. Joe' trilogy is about to happen.

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Review

I stand before you, humbled, and tasked with explaining, in comprehensible terms, just what the heck 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' is all about. Attaining comprehensibility, however, is a chore the filmmakers didn't wrestle with, doubling-down on pure adrenaline and big movie star charisma. It's a risky move and sometimes it works. Sadly, this is not one of those cases.
While there are chuckles to be had (I mean, that Cobra Commander helmet is just too incredible to dismiss) there isn't enough whiz-bang in this film to fully deflect the utter lack of a story or absence of intriguing characters. It is, surprisingly, the lesser of the two 'G.I. Joe' films, with Stephen Sommers' 2009 'The Rise of Cobra' featuring much more team spirit, pep and fun.

New 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Spot Sells Big Action and Goofy Humor

by Jacob Hall March 23, 2013 @ 12:58 PM
Sure, 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' may feature tons of big, explosive action, but a newly spot has us more interested in the dynamic between Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum, who come off like a well-honed comedy team instead of American super soldiers. Can this movie be as funny as it is exciting? We certainly hope so. See for yourself below.
