But that doesn’t stop the rumor mill from churning right along, and some insiders might have gotten a few new details about a brand-new spaceship and what a certain ex-Stormtrooper will be doing onboard. BREAKING: John Boyega is sitting down. The Star Wars actor tweeted a new photo of himself in character as Jake Pentecost on the set for Pacific Rim: Uprising, and he’s got a lot on his mind. (Nod to /Film for taking notice.) Take a look at the photo below, with Boyega captioning it simply with “I am Pentecost. 2018 #PacificUprising” in reference to the film’s slated release date of February 23, 2018.

Imperial Dreams sure sounds like a Star Wars film. In fact, there’s a documentary about the making of Star Wars called Empire of Dreams. So any confusion about this Netflix movie that stars The Force Awakens’ John Boyega is entirely understandable. But, no, Imperial Dreams is an entirely different sort of film. The official synopsis from Netflix explains the curious synchronicity:

Pacific Rim: Malestrom’s title was just confirmed by John Boyega himself, and now he’s filming the mecha vs. monsters sequel in Sydney, Australia on a very post-apocalyptic-looking set. Some set photos came out today of the movie’s production, and Boyega is sporting a very cool jacket and an even cooler haircut.

The Apocalypse Is Cancelled Once More. The Apocalypse, Which Before Had Been Un-Cancelled, Has Been Re-Cancelled Again. Cancelling the Apocalypse? Not So Fast. It’s a credit to overseas audiences that Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro’s technicolor homage to classic Toho monster films and giant mecha anime, is getting a sequel. The movie did just okay stateside, but was especially well-received in China, where most of the action is set (probably on purpose). For a while, the sequel looked a little precarious, but alien kaiju from underneath the sea cannot be contained, and the sequel’s star John Boyega is very excited that as of today it’s now officially filming.

We’ve known for months that Alden Ehrenreich was our new Han Solo, but the closing panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe brought the official announcement, plus a surprise appearance by the actor.

Things were looking pretty rough for Pacific Rim 2, but the sequel has been coming together slowly but surely, first with the addition of former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight as director, then with Derek Connolly as screenwriter, and — best of all — with John Boyega joining the cast as our new apocalypse-canceller. Today brings even more good news for fans of the kaiju vs. robots blockbuster, as Pacific Rim 2 has been given an official release date.
