Sound of My Voice
The best movies of 2012?! I don't want to freak you out, but 2012 is half over. Wait, that's pessimistic! 2012 has half-begun! Wait, that makes no sense. Either way, you catch my drift, the year is at its midway point and that means it has been six months since I've made a critical top ten list – and I'm starting to twitch. To that end, I'm taking this opportunity to count down my ten favorite movies of the first half of 2012, hence this early Best Movies of 2012 list.
'Sound of My Voice' is a testament to the ingenuity of independent film. Here is a movie that builds a massive science-fiction world out of literally nothing. It features dangerous cults, government conspiracies, mysteriously gifted children, and possible time travelers -- and almost the entire thing takes place in a drab, suburban basement. Director/co-writer Zal Batmanglij and star/co-writer Brit Marling likely couldn't afford to mount all the futuristic stuff they imagined onscreen so they built an ingenious work around: they show you almost none of it and use the sense of mystery to reinforce the film's central themes.
This may seem like a movie about the future. But it's really a movie about belief.
Where did this Brit Marling come from? She comes from the future! Or at least that's what her character Maggie wants you to believe in her film 'Sound of My Voice.'
This beautiful, young, inquisitive actress and screenwriter has been a part of the indie film conversation since her double-barreled debut at Sundance 2010. The star and co-author of the mostly good 'Another Earth' is now primed to release her second low-budget science-fiction (kinda) drama/thriller and I am here to tell you that it is fantastic.
And it should come as no surprise that Ms. Marling, a Georgetown economics major and, again the co-author and star and Georgetown economics major, speaks in sharp, assured phrases, pouncing on difficult topics with a fierce intellect.
We met in an eerie boardroom somewhere where she was carrying a bag from Evolution, a store in SoHo that sells jewelry made of bones, change purses made from frogs, paperweights of insects in amber...
There's been a lot of talk about the Fox Searchlight independent movie 'Sound of My Voice' ever since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last January, but at the same time not too much has been revealed about the story until now. Apple just released the brand new trailer for the drama which gives us a better look at the strange world that Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius) are sucked into.
It's been a long journey for Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's 'Sound of My Voice,' the quiet little sci-fi film about a couple infiltrating a cult led by a beautiful, mysterious woman named Maggie (Marling), who claims she's from the future. But the film is set for release this summer and we finally have a poster for the film.
'Sound of My Voice' became an instant favorite at last year's Sundance and SXSW film festivals with its dreamy story of a cult led by the equally dreamy Brit Marling, who co-wrote the film with director Zal Batmanglij. Fox searchlight released several new i
