While 'Star Trek' alum Leonard Nimoy make an appearance in both 'Star Trek' and 'Star Trek Into Darkness,' William Shatner, another one of the most recognized figures from days of 'Trek' past, hasn't, but this could all change for 'Star Trek 3.' Roberto Orci, who's been attached to the project for some time following J.J. Abrams' move to 'Star Wars: Episode 7,' reportedly wants to reunite these two buddies onscreen for the third installment.

The 'Star Trek' franchise had all kinds of ups and downs over its 50-year history -- there have been great shows and a bad shows, brilliant movies and insipid ones, memorable starship Captains and Captain Janeway. Now, however, the franchise faces its greatest threat yet. Please don't let Roberto Orci direct 'Star Trek 3.'

Let's not put 'Star Trek 3' into warp speed just yet. After promising reports that 'Attack the Block' director (and frequent Edgar Wright collaborator) Joe Cornish would be directing the follow up to 'Star Trek Into Darkness' comes word that Cornish is "no longer involved" with the upcoming sequel.

Though 'Star Trek Into Darkness' producer/director J.J. Abrams has his attentions elsewhere, 'Star Trek 3' is moving forward, with Joe Cornish the most recent director rumored to take Abrams' place. Now it appears the writer's room has had a bit of a shake-up as J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have joined the film, while Alex Kurtzman has jumped off the project.

With J.J. Abrams switching teams from 'Star Trek' to 'Star Wars,' the director's chair for 'Star Trek 3' is still vacant. Though Joe Cornish of 'Attack of the Block' is being eyed to fill the void, whomever lands the job will most likely have a smaller window budget-wise through which to steer the Enterprise into a third installment.

With J.J. Abrams hard at work on 'Star Wars: Episode VII' to meet a December 2015 release deadline, someone has to step up and direct 'Star Trek 3.' Plenty of names have been tossed about as potential replacements, and now we can add a new one to the running: 'Attack the Block' director Joe Cornish, which might be the best possible choice we've heard so far.

Last month, we first heard the rumor that 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' director Rupert Wyatt was being considered to direct 'Star Trek 3.' And then ... silence. Unlike the quickly shot-down Jon M. Chu rumors, this one was allowed to linger, lending the news a bit more credibility.
