Sony hasn't been shy about their plans for Spider-Man. Before 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' hit theaters, they had release dates for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man 4.' They've announced spin-off films for Venom and the villainous supergroup known as the Sinister Six. The franchise's producers have openly mocked the idea of ever teaming up with Marvel Studios or 20th Century Fox for the kind of crossover comic fans all over the world so desperately crave.
In short, Sony wants to transform the Spider-Man movie franchise into a Spider-Man movie universe ... and as of right now, it's not working.

Peter Parker Will Be the Only Spider-Man You Ever See in the Movies

Andrew Garfield has publicly intoned that he's not long for the 'Spider-Man' franchise once 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3' is done ("I know that I don't particularly want to be a 40-year-old Spider-Man..."). One of the popular theories is that the franchise will continue with a new Spider-Man, as Peter Parker hands over the reigns to fan favorite Miles Morales (who, in the comics, took over after the "Death of Spider-Man" storyline). It would be a neat way to keep the franchise coming, while also diversifying the superhero universe. Except, according to the 'Amazing Spider-Man' producers, it's never going to happen.

'Amazing Spider-Man 3' Could See the Return of J. Jonah Jameson

When rebooting the 'Spider-Man' franchise, director Marc Webb brought many of the classic characters with him to the 'Amazing Spider-Man' films. One character that didn't make the cut was J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker's blustery editor at The Daily Bugle. Jameson was played memorably by J.K. Simmons in Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' films and Webb now admits it's time for him to appear in the new series of films.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' isn't in theaters for a few more weeks, but we're already talking about 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3.' And 'The Amazing Spider-Man 4.' And 'Sinister Six' and 'Venom', which today we learn will both arrive in between parts three and four of the 'Spider-Man' movies. If your choice of death involves overdosing on Spider-Man, the next few years are going to be very helpful.

With 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' set to hit theaters in just under two months, director Marc Webb has been one rather busy gentleman. In addition to promoting the new film, Webb is also preparing to go back to work for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3,' which will hit theaters in 2016 -- but for fans hoping that the director will stick around for the fourth film, we've got some news: Webb will sadly not be returning to the director's chair after Spidey's third installment.

It's a good thing people really like Spider-Man because he's the one thing Sony seems to be relying on at the multiplex. Although the studio fell on rough times these past few years, 2012's 'The Amazing Spider-Man' was a big hit and this year's 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' looks ready to rock the box, as well. But how much Spidey will audiences tolerate before they pull a J. Jonah Jameson and declare him a menace? Well, the folks at Sony are ready to push their luck on that front with plans to release one Spider-Man movie a year for the foreseeable future.

A strange thing happened during the production of 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2.' Shailene Woodley was cast in the small role of Mary Jane Watson, AKA, the love of Peter Parker's life, but the part was completely excised in post-production for reasons that remain nebulous. Although she will not be appearing in the second film of the rebooted superhero franchise, some have wondered if she would be brought back for the inevitable third and fourth films ... and now we have an answer.
