This week marks the 75th anniversary of 'The Wizard of Oz,' the classic 1939 film that stands out in the minds of many as one of the greatest films in cinema history. But what you may have forgotten is Disney's often overlooked 1985 sequel, 'Return to Oz' -- the arguably more faithful but much darker and totally terrifying follow-up that eschewed the musical elements and the vibrant colors to embrace metaphors about childhood trauma and escapist fantasies ... you know, for kids.

As frustrating as it was for an already long ceremony to pause for a seemingly unnecessary musical number, all was immediately forgiven when Pink took to the 2014 Oscars stage to perform a rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as part of a 'Wizard of Oz' tribute. Sure, that iconic musical fantasy may have nothing to do with anything happening in or around the broadcast, but does anyone really need a reason to celebrate one of the greatest films ever made?

NBC's gamble in resurrecting the live TV musical paid off handsomely (for viewers and tweets, anyway), so the network has set their sights even higher. NBC will next look to adapt 'Peter Pan' as a live televised performance, and has also given a series order to 'Wizard of Oz' drama 'Emerald City,' and a pilot order for 'Grey's Anatomy' vet Katherine Heigl's CIA drama 'State of Affairs.'

We’ve all heard the casual moans of fan communities that Hollywood never comes up with anything original anymore, settling into the familiar patterns of sequels, remakes, and adaptations of familiar properties to cash in on brand recognition. And while remakes have become subtly accepted as a chance for a new take on dormant properties, the recent ‘RoboCoptrailer reminded us just how much passions can strain in the dissection of beloved classics.

Forget 'The Wizard of Oz,' we're closer to the 'Wizard of Oy,' at this point. Following NBC's announcement to develop a 'Game of Thrones'-style take on the L. Frank Baum mythology titled 'Emerald City,' which itself followed CBS modern medical drama 'Dorothy,' The CW has thrown their hat onto the yellow brick road in developing a "what if" take on the classic tale, titled 'Dorothy Must Die.'

Following news that CBS had an eye toward adapting Frank Baum's 1900 classic as medical drama 'Dorothy,' NBC has begun development on its own fantasy take, 'Emerald City,' utilizing a darker, 'Game of Thrones'-influenced approach to the classic story.
