Before Steven Spielberg and George Lucas figured out the plot for what would eventually be Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the prequel almost brought back Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood and her father Abner Ravenwood as major characters. Three of the biggest scenes in Temple of Doom — the opening in Shanghai, parachuting out of a plane in a raft and the mine car chase — were all scenes that were originally intended to be in Raiders of the Lost Ark before they were cut to save time. Spielberg and Lucas liked them so much that when plans for filming in China were blocked by the local government, they added these new scenes in and moved the action to India.
