Earlier we showed you the trailer for one of the best films from this year’s SXSW, and now we’re thrilled to show you the trailer for one of the best films from neighboring Austin film festival Fantastic Fest. Behold, the first trailer for ‘The Duke of Burgundy,’ a film that renders ‘50 Shades of Grey’ even more unnecessary than it already was. From the filmmakers behind ‘Berberian Sound Studio’ comes this seductive and brilliant new film that will definitely give you something to talk about.

‘The Duke of Burgundy’ tells the story of the dominant/submissive relationship between a lepidopterist and her lover, a seemingly meek housekeeper and plaything. It’s difficult to say much more about the film without spoiling some of the many surprises in this gorgeous and sensual drama, which also has some delightful moments of humor.

I reviewed ‘The Duke of Burgundy’ at Fantastic Fest back in September, where it was inarguably my favorite film of the entire fest (a festival that also featured the premiere of ‘Nightcrawler’). The elegantly quirky film impressed with its insightful and thoughtful exploration of not just the dominant/submissive relationship dynamics, but of relationships as a whole. It’s far more sexy, complex, and interesting than next year’s ‘50 Shades of Grey’ could ever hope to be.

‘The Duke of Burgundy’ is directed by Peter Strickland and stars Sidse Babett Knudsen and Chiara D’Anna (with not a single man in the entire film!), and hits theaters on January 23.
