I’ve gotta admit, when I saw the first trailer for Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell’s new comedy I was sort of underwhelmed. I mean, obviously I will see anything involving these two comedic goldmines, but The House just looked kind of bland, and had me worried for another Baby Mama-esque misfire. But having watched the new Red Band trailer and laughing more than once, I’m kind of into it. Maybe I just needed a couple f-bombs from Ferrell and Poehler to secure interest.

When two parents, Scott (Farrell) and Kate (Poehler) lose their daughter’s college tuition fund, they decide to do what any reasonable parent would do: start an illegal underground casino in their home. (What else are basements for?) Jason Mantzoukas is perfectly cast as their guide to the underground gambling where Ferrell tries to channel his best De Niro circa Casino. The best moment of the trailer involved an axe and comes at the end, and though the scene was teased in the original trailer, it’s best served by the brutal red band version. And then there’s Poehler and Ferrell mimicking me as a college freshman having a rough morning after a heavy night of drinking. Here’s the full synopsis:

After Scott and Kate Johansen (Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler) lose their daughter Alex’s college fund, they become desperate to earn it back so she can pursue her dream of attending a university. With the help of their neighbor Frank (Jason Mantzoukas), they decide to start an illegal casino in his house.

The House also stars Nick Kroll, Fargo’s Allison Tolman, Michaela Watkins, Jessie Ennis, Rob Huebel and Jeremy Renner. It’s written by Neighbors screenwriters Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, and Cohen makes his directorial debut with the film. The raunchy humor and spontaneous shenanigans of Neighbors is seen all over this film, but lets just hope the new trailer doesn’t feature the film’s only good moments so it can truly… bring down the house come June 30. (Sorry.)
