‘The Revenant’ TV Spot Puts a Grizzly Leonardo DiCaprio Through Hell
This Christmas we’re getting not one, but two violent films in brutally cold wintertime settings, because nothing says the holidays like blood splattered across snow — according to Quentin Tarantino and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, anyway. A new TV spot for Iñárritu’s The Revenant has arrived online, and just as the title suggests, it features a lot of Leonardo DiCaprio fighting (and fighting…and fighting…) to survive.
Based on a true story, The Revenant stars DiCaprio as a hunter left for dead by his fellow men following a violent bear attack. Struggling to survive on his own in the wilderness, he sets out on a revenge mission, tracking his former comrades and the man responsible for killing his son. You know, typical cheery Christmastime viewing.
Early reviews of Iñárritu’s latest are decidedly mixed, with many predictably praising the work of acclaimed, Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki but finding the film — like Iñárritu’s Birdman — ultimately hollow beneath its gorgeous surface. The trailers definitely showcase the gorgeous, cold look of The Revenant, but the style of some of those shots is so evocative of Birdman that it’s a little concerning, to say the least.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Deep in the uncharted American wilderness, hunter Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is severely injured and left for dead by a traitorous member of his team, John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). With sheer will as his only weapon, Glass must navigate a hostile environment, a brutal winter, and warring Native American tribes in relentless quest to survive and exact vengeance on Fitzgerald.
