Pete Travis' satirical (oh, God, I hope it is satirical) look at crime and punishment in a future dystopia doesn't quite connect as a meaningful drama. Where it succeeds is as a fever dream. The 3D images of dopers on “slo-mo” is some of the most beautiful stuff put to film this year. This is a film that got better the second time and my admiration increases with distance. Plus Lena Headey's Mama is arguably the best screen villain of the year. I'm eager to see what Travis has up his sleeve next.

Best part: Mama's final plunge.
