Good news: War for the Planet of the Apes has added Woody Harrelson to the cast. Bad news: Woody Harrelson will not be playing an ape. Good news: Woody Harrelson will be playing a mysterious character known as “the Colonel,” which means he’ll probably have at least one scene where he fist-fights an ape to the death. After all, movie characters whose names are just military titles do that kind of thing.

The news of Harrelson’s casting comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter, who don’t have much to add beyond his character’s name. We know that Andy Serkis will once again star as Caesar, the leader of a tribe of hyper-intelligent apes on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and that director Matt Reeves will be back. That’s only good news – Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was sublime and much of the credit goes to those two.

All plot details concerning War For the Planet of the Apes are currently under lock and key, but we can make a few assumptions based on that title. [UPDATE: Reeves confirmed to us last night on Twitter that the title is officially War FOR the Planet of the Apes, not War of, as was previously announced.] The previous film saw Caesar’s apes enter open conflict with the local human population, which resulted in nothing going particularly well for anyone. With military reinforcements on the war, the final scene of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes suggested that this morally murky battle was only just beginning. The sequel prrrobably won’t see everyone living in harmony – War for the Planet of the Apes is going to be a very literal title. Since Harrelson is playing “the Colonel,” we can probably assume that he’s playing a member of those military reinforcements. Knowing this series, he’s going to be a villain, but the kind of villain we completely and totally get.

War for the Planet of the Apes will be released on July 14, 2017.
