To most, MacGruber was a flop. The movie opened to terrible reviews and made almost no money. To the rest, the enlightened, MacGruber is a bonafide comedy classic. (Yes, a group of writers voted it the fifth funniest movie of the past 25 years in our poll.) So while not everyone is excited about a MacGruber 2, many of us are, and one of those people is star Will Forte who says they have an idea for the movie that is so crazy, they’re not sure they even have the guts to pull it off (and this is from a man who last shoved a celery stick up his ass).

Forte took a break from his work on The Last Man on Earth Season 2 to talk to Entertainment Weekly about the current status of MacGruber 2, which he says is on hold at least until Last Man’s hiatus. But he quickly adds, “There’s nothing I would rather do than [MacGruber 2].”

Forte, director Jorma Taccone and writer John Solomon have written about two-thirds of an outline and what they have so far already sounds insane. We’ll let Forte describe:

There is a possibility of starting it in a way that you would never ever start an action movie. We have this idea for a cold open, which we just don’t know if we have the balls to do. And we’ve done some crazy stuff. This is just like, ‘Do we really want to do this? Is this how we want to start out the movie?’ It’s pretty gnarly. But we might just have to do it.

DO IT DO IT DO IT.

Forte also notes that once they finish the script, it’ll have to go through a rigorous rewrite process:

Then, of course, we have to take maybe a month to have a dick-joke pass where we make our dick jokes better. And then we’ll do another dick joke pass. And then we’ll see where it is from there.

Previously, Taccone had told us of their plans for MacGruber 2 to have a Christmas theme, not unlike Die Hard, which was a big inspiration on the original film.

Though Forte, Taccone and Solomon remain committed to MacGruber 2, the real issue will be whether anyone will want to fund it. Both Forte and Taccone have said that they wouldn’t want to do the movie for less than the budget of the original (about $9 million) and considering what the original film made, we can understand how financiers might be a little reticent. But, if Netflix can give Adam Sandler millions for his “I put my pee-pee in your tee-pee” movie, maybe they can give Forte and crew some cash for MacGruber 2.
