Zach Galifianakis Says They Never Should’ve Made the ‘Hangover’ SequelsMike Sampson |
The original The Hangover was a bonafide comedy sensation. The highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all-time made over $275 million. To put that in perspective, The Hangover in 2009 made more than Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The LEGO Movie and Star Trek. And few would argue that the first Hangover was actually a funny movie. But then, there were the sequels… Those were not very funny movies and audiences seemed to agree with the third and final movie making just over $100 million, despite opening in more theaters than the original. We all thought that they shouldn’t have made those movies and now star Zach Galifianakis says he agrees.
Galifianakis, who is out promoting his new FX comedy Baskets, told Marc Maron on the WTF podcast that he wishes they never returned for Parts 2 or 3, but they were contractually obligated to. “We’re contracted up to 12. I feel a real appetite out there for more…” Galifianakis said, joking about the ambivalence toward the final film. “Look, that was a good chunk of my life that I do not regret at all but I wished we had just done one. I think leave well enough alone sometimes.”
“Leave well enough alone” is a motto we tend to preach when it comes to sequels, but it’s also very hard to ask a movie studio, whose job it is to make money, to not make a sequel to a film that made over $275 million and crossed over into the pop culture zeitgeist. The film made stars out of Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms, of course Warner Bros. was going to want them to return for more (and they wisely wrote that into their original contracts). If the subsequent Hangover sequels were also great comedies — like 22 Jump Street — Galifianakis might be singing a different tune.
But no good franchise ever really stays dead forever, something even Zach can recognize. “I mean, in 10 years when all this dries up I’m sure I’ll be knocking on people’s doors, ‘Hey, I got this idea… look, I’m still weird!’” Get ready for The Hangover Reborn!
