Meet the New Cast of the ‘Avatar’ Sequels
James Cameron’s Terminator 2 ends with Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor talking about “the unknown future” that always rolls towards us. And it’s true; the future is uncertain. But some things about it are known. Like the fact that there will be four Avatar sequels in the years ahead from Cameron. That is definitely happening.
With shooting just underway on Avatar 2 (and, apparently Avatar 3; Cameron told THR that they’re making Avatar 2 and 3 simultaneously, then making Avatar 4 and 5 simultaneously), the PR campaign for the franchise is revving back into action like .a giant mech piloted by Stephen Lang. That includes our first look at the sequels’ new cast additions, all of whom are apparently extremely young. Take a look:
These young men and women are (in the second picture, left to right): Duane Evans Jr., Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Trinity Bliss, Bailey Bass, Jamie Flatters, and the awesomely named Jack Champion. All but one of these actors will not be recognizable onscreen, of course; they’ll all be Na’vi-ized through motion-capture technology in order to play (per EW) “Sully’s family” and “the children from another Na’vi clan, called the Metkayina” who live underwater. The non-Na’vi of the bunch is Champion who plays Spider, “a human teenager born at the Hell’s Gate military complex, a crucial location in the first film.”
It’s interesting to see Cameron move Avatar in a youthful direction for these sequels. But I guess it could just be a matter of practicality. When you’re planning a decade of movies, you need people who are very young and have a lot of energy. This is going to be a lot of work. The first Avatar sequel opens in theaters in December of 2020.
