A sequel to 1994’s ‘Dumb and Dumber’ seemed like a silly idea until ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ went and made $36 million in its opening weekend. Now, the sky is the limit for the aging idiots played by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels and the thought of a third film (‘Dumb and Dumberer’ is not official canon) doesn’t seem all that crazy. In fact, the new film is already waaay ahead of you. If you stuck around through the end of ‘Dumb and Dumber To,’ you already know that the post-credits scene teases a theoretical third entry in the series.

Naturally, we’re going to delve into spoilers here. If you haven’t seen the film yet and want to see this scene completely fresh, this is your final chance to turn away. Go on. Shoo.

Still here? Anyway, ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ concludes with Harry and Lloyd triumphant, driving home in their own personal Zamboni. However, there is a truck following them and the driver of that truck is none other than Sea Bass (Cam Neely), the trucker they frequently tormented throughout the original film. And guess what? He wants the revenge he’s been planning for the previous two decades. The film then promises ‘Dumb and Dumber For,’ which will arrive in theaters in, uh, 2034.

The joke is obvious enough: it took 20 years to get the first proper sequel made, so it’ll have to take another 20 years to get part three off the ground. It’s actually a pretty funny and self-aware gag. Like the wonderful closing credits of ‘22 Jump Street,’ it’s a joke that makes fun of the very idea of another sequel. A third film would be preposterous!

And yet, this joke was filmed before ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ opened to such big numbers. We wouldn’t be surprised if ‘Dumb and Dumber For’ (which is a great title for a third film) actually becomes a reality in the next few years instead of the next two decades. You just know Cam Neely is sitting by his phone.
