New ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Photo Reveals First Look at Young Newt
Move over, hot young Dumbledore. There’s a new cutie patootie in town: Young Newt Scamander. A new image from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has revealed our first look at Joshua Shea as the younger version of Eddie Redmayne’s Newt — as well as Jude Law’s Dumbledore, seen actually teaching a class at Hogwarts.
Entertainment Weekly debuted the new official photo from the Fantastic Beasts sequel, which will show us Newt’s younger days as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (via flashback, of course). Back in those days, Dumbledore actually taught students, and it looks like he’s instructing Newt in a Defense Against the Dark Arts class in the photo below:
Aww, look at little baby Newt.
As revealed in the first Fantastic Beasts by Colin Farrell’s Percival Graves, Newt was expelled from Hogwarts in the early 20th century for a mysterious incident that involved a magical beast and his friend (and possible love interest) Leta Lestrange (played by Zoe Kravitz). EW points out that the flashback scene in the photo above might just reveal the incident that led to Newt’s expulsion — which Dumbledore objected against.
Speaking with EW, Redmayne declined to confirm a prior romantic relationship between Newt and Leta, though he did disclose that “she’s now in a relationship with Newt’s brother” — something that will be revealed at the start of The Crimes of Grindelwald. The brother in question is Theseus Scamander. Played by Callum Turner, Theseus is a “highly respected Auror” in the wizarding world.
The Crimes of Grindelwald picks up with Newt as he reunites with Dumbledore to confront the eponymous evil wizard, played by Johnny Depp. The sequel also features returning stars Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, and Ezra Miller, and hits theaters on November 16.
