With Furious 7 shattering the April box office record and with the franchise as popular as ever, do you even need to wonder if they’re making another sequel? Recently, we learned that the eighth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise would move the action to New York. According to a new report, it seems their new location plans are contingent upon the return of one actor in particular: Eva Mendes, who previously appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Mendes is indeed a bigger star now than she was when she appeared in the first Fast and Furious sequel, and getting her to reprise her role for Fast and Furious 8 probably won’t be as easy as it would have been, say, for the third film. But according to Latino Review, that’s exactly what Universal wants to do.

Over on his Instagram account, LR’s Umberto Gonzalez reports that the studio is seeking Mendes to return to the franchise and reprise her role as U.S. Customs Agent Monica Fuentes, last seen teaming up with Paul Walker’s Brian and Tyrese Gibson’s Roman to take down a Miami drug lord.

So far, we don’t know much else about the upcoming installment, which has yet to announce a director or returning cast members (though most of them are a given). Mendes can be seen next in Ryan Gosling’s Lost River, hitting select theaters and VOD on April 10.
