Kate Winslet Joins James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Sequels
Kate Winslet and James Cameron are back together again after 20 years: Winslet has officially joined Cameron’s Avatar sequels, which began production last week in California.
Deadline reports that Winslet will be playing a character named “Ronal,” and that’s all we know. “Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” Cameron said in his statement. Titanic rocketed Winslet to stardom and was the highest-grossing movie of all time — that is, until Cameron’s Avatar rolled up in 2009 and changed the game.
Cameron didn’t elaborate on who “Ronal” is. We don’t even know if she’s a human or an alien, and, to be honest, coming up with a theory is pretty much impossible since Cameron has said these sequels will expand the universe of Avatar so profoundly. Ronal could be a blue Na’vi, she could be a human from another mining planet, or a member of an entirely new alien species we’ve never seen before — maybe one of those aquatic ones that at least one of the movies would be featuring.
Production on all four Avatar sequels began simultaneously on September 25 in Manhattan Beach, California. Avatar 2 will be released December 8, 2020, followed by the third on December 17, 2021, the fourth December 20, 2024, and the fifth December 19, 2025.
