It’s been almost a year since we first heard that national treasure Lin-Manuel Miranda would bring Patrick Rothfuss’ best-selling Kingkiller Chronicle to both movies and TV, and it’s finally Showtime for the latter. The premium network has officially snatched up a Kingkiller adaptation, setting Miranda to executive produce and – what else – write music.

For those unfamiliar with the 2007 book series, Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle follows magically-gifted musician Kvothe as he “grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen” (via The Hollywood Reporter). Leverage creator John Rogers will write the pilot and serve as showrunner, while the series itself would follow “a pair of wandering performers on their adventures through the unique and startling world of Temerant, immersing audiences in a universe of unexpected heroes, mystical places and terrifying dark forces.”

Says Miranda of the project:

Showtime has always championed bold storytelling. Pat Rothfuss’ Kingkiller series is some of the most exciting storytelling I have ever read. I could not be more thrilled to help bring the sights and sounds of his wondrous world of Temerant to the screen.

Interestingly, the series functions as an origin story set a generation before the first novel, The Name of the Wind, which would likely form the basis for a film branch that Lionsgate seeks to establish. We’ll hear more as Showtime’s Kingkiller Chronicle enters pre-production, so stay tuned.
